Gorenjska region in the northwest where the ridges of the Alps dominate the the landscape climate is alpine with lost of precipitation (cc. 2500-3000 mm, half of which is snow). You won't get heatstroke in the alpine valleys since temperatures are moderate in summer and cold at the higher peaks and plateaus. Winters in Slovenia''s mountains can be harsh with lost of snow and temperatures falling well below zero. Snow can stay till April at the high-altitide ski resorts.

The Slovenia coast and most part of Primorska enjoys a very pleasant Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny weather (average yearly temperature is cc. 13.5) and mild winters. The number of sunny hours a year is the highest along the Adriatic coast in Slovenia reaching 2300. The influence of sea on climate can be felt as far as the Soca river up to Trenta valley.
Most of central and eastern Slovenia has continental climate with dry, hot summers and cold winters. On a scorching day in July in Prekmurje temperatures can climb up to 35 °C while at a harsh January night can drop to -20 °C
Gusts of the Burja (bora) wind blowing form the northeastern direction can sometimes be unpleasant in Vipava valley in the Karst region and along the coast. The speed of the dry and cold wind can reach 150 km/h. It can last for 2-3 days.
